Digitizing Flat & Bound Paper

We’re excited to announce our featured presenter, David Ranzan. Ranzan has been the University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian at Adelphi University since 2014. Prior to this position, he was the University Archivist at Salisbury University from 2008 to 2014 and Digital Editor for the Thomas A. Edison Papers at Rutgers University from 2000 to 2008. He holds a MA in History from East Stroudsburg University and a MLIS from Rutgers University.

Presentation Abstract:

Through a generous donation, Adelphi University acquired the Bill and Bunny Hoest Comic Art Collection in early 2018. The collection consists of approximately 35,000 pieces of original comic art produced over 50 years, and includes the Lockhorns, Agatha Crum, Howard Huge and Laugh Parade gag cartoons to name just a few. David Ranzan, the University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian at Adelphi University, will discuss his experience working with the collection, covering everything from the process from donor relations to digital preservation and online accessibility.

Following the presentation by David Ranzan, DT’s own Arnab Chatterjee will provide and overview of digitizing flat and bound paper. We’ll pull some samples from DT’s archive and walk you step by step through the best practices of preserving paper materials. Before and after the presentation you’ll have the opportunity to ask any additional questions you may have about the process and equipment we use.

Individuals are welcome to bring their own paper material (flat or bound) to the event for the demonstrations, but it is not required.

The event will be held at the DT Resource Center in Midtown Manhattan from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.
